AKB0048: Canon history for Nagisa Motomiya, to episode 10 of Next Stage
Backstory:
Nagisa Motomiya grew up in a grim future. Entertainment is banned on many planets, a ban that’s enforced by a group called DES and the Digital Galactic Trade Organization, and her life seemed dull, even as a child, on her little planet of Lancastar. That is, until the intergalactic idol group AKB0048 showed up to do a guerilla concert. Nagisa and her three best friends - girls named Chieri, Yuuka, and Orine - snuck out to attend the show, and they were absolutely blown away by the sights and sounds, as well as the dedication the performers showed. That day, she vowed that when she was old enough, she would join the group.
Fast forward a few years, to the present day. Entertainment is still banned on a lot of planets, though things have gotten better on Lancastar after 0048’s secret concert. Chieri has moved away, but Yuuka, Orine, and Nagisa haven’t forgotten their childhood vow. The time comes for the next group of girls - the 77th Generation - to be chosen for 0048, and the three girls nervously prepare their audition videos. They all pass the first round, but that presents a problem - Nagisa’s father works for Lancastar’s Entertainment Bureau, and forbids her to go to the next stage of the audition. With the encouragement of the other girls and her mother, however, Nagisa goes off, taking the next step towards her dream.
It isn’t going to be easy, though. AKB0048 members need to know how to sing and dance, yes, but they also go into combat situations in order to perform on planets that are under the Entertainment Ban. The girls’ final audition isn’t singing or dancing; it’s protecting the main members of the group during what they’re told is a concert on a planet under the Ban. (AKB0048, being modeled off the real AKB48, is set up with an ‘understudy’ and ‘successor’ system. Understudies are allowed to perform on occasion, but successors are the real stars, each of them taking the name of a member of the original AKB48.)
It’s a more difficult audition than anyone could imagine, but despite her reservations about combat, Nagisa passes the audition, along with several other girls - her friends Yuuka, Orine, and Chieri, a little stowaway named Sonata, a diehard 0048 fan named Suzuko, and a pessimistic girl named Makoto.
It doesn’t take the new girls long to settle into their new lives as 0048 members. Every experience serves to teach them something - from their first experience meeting fans at a handshake event, to their first photo shoot. An operation not unlike the concert on Lancastar - a guerilla concert on a planet called Tundrastar - gives the 77th generation girls the chance to directly inspire other girls in the way they were first inspired, in a series of mini-concerts designed to disrupt the DES forces who want to interrupt the main show.
The first season ends with a surprise - the first concert for the understudies, and on Lancastar. However, things have changed on Nagisa’s home planet in the months since she left it. The planet is almost completely back under the Entertainment Ban, and her father has been thrown in prison for supporting entertainment. Her mother hasn’t taken the news well at all, and has fallen into a depression.
This affects Nagisa deeply. She’s scheduled to sing a solo in the concert, but she loses her voice after finding out what’s happened to her parents. She decides to give up her dream of being in 0048, but the others convince her to get through the concert first, since she can still dance. The problem? How to get the show done. DES is determined to stop them. But there’s one last, unexpected way: a voice from the past, a former member who disappeared in a mysterious incident. She opens the way to the place Nagisa and the others first saw 0048, and Nagisa’s voice comes back just in time to perform the concert. The understudies all get the chance to really glow.
Six months pass, and things remain busy. However, the DGTO and DES have stepped up their attacks. When Chieri and Sonata are kidnapped by DES and taken to Kasumigastar for a ‘trial’, Nagisa is right there on the rescue mission team, determined to make sure her friends are okay. After that, the general elections are announced - and this is a big deal. The top 10 members, successor or understudy, get to record and perform it. While Nagisa isn’t selected to be in the top 10, she sees the elections as a big push for herself. She’s determined to become a successor now, more than ever, and tells everyone else she’s going to work even harder to become hard to beat.
As more time passes, Nagisa sees one of the other understudies - Mimori, who has always supported her with her friendly smile - become a successor, and that's even more of an inspiration for her. However, her dream is dashed when the forces of DES, led secretly by Chieri's father, the owner of the powerful intergalactic Zodiac Corporation, attack Akibastar. The attack is devastating, coming unexpectedly during the middle of a concert. All of AKB0048 comes together to defend their home, but in the end, it's of no use. Some of the members retreat underneath the theatre. Yuko Oshima the 9th sacrifices herself in order for the rest of the girls to retreat in their spaceship, leaving them reeling in shock and sadness. The planet itself falls into DES control.
The girls wind up being branded as criminals, and chased to a remote planet called Funghistar, a planet that's a deep rainforest. Their ship malfunctioning and damaged, they have to stop. It turns out that even this remote planet has been touched by the dual forces of DES and Zodiac - they find that the native creatures, who should be friendly, have been terrorized, their young used as bait to draw the adults out of the woods. Why? The planet is rich in dualium, a mineral that's invaluable for powering ships. In order to do their mining work, Zodiac is ruining the planet. But the girls are able to do some good, using their song to communicate with the native creatures and drive DES and Zodiac away. As a thank-you, the creatures give the idols a large dualium crystal, which they use to power up their ship. Only one problem: Nagisa and Chieri decide they have to deal with Zodiac by dealing with Chieri's father. As AKB0048's ship flies away, the girls stow away onboard a Zodiac ship.
